Mapping the Moon’s South Pole

The Moon’s polar regions are not easily observed from the Earth (or from non-polar Lunar orbit), but NASA has obtained high-resolution radar maps of the Moon’s south pole by using the Goldstone Solar System Radar in the Mojave Desert. The maps are 50 times more detailed than the one-kilometre-resolution imagery from the Clementine spacecraft, but will in turn be made obsolete by upcoming one-metre imagery from the Lunar Reconnaisance Orbiter, scheduled to launch later this year.
