China Cracks Down on Mapmaking

The Chinese government is going after foreign mapmakers who “illegally survey, gather and publish geographical information on China,” the Xinhua News Agency is reporting (AOL News; Irish Examiner; Shanghai Daily; People’s Daily). It’s not clear to me whether this is solely directed at surveyers gathering information without permission, or at extraterritorial map publishers as well. (Can you use Google Earth in China?)
